Celebrating 2024 International Day of Rural Women

Rural areas are defined as regions situated outside urban centers, characterised by expansive landscapes, lower population densities, and a strong dependence on agriculture or natural resources. These areas often foster a sense of community and may provide a more traditional way of life compared to cities. Typical features include agricultural land, forests, and small villages. Significant regional disparities exist, and poverty remains a pressing issue in these rural communities.

According to UNDP and UN Women (2022), approximately 70% of Myanmar’s total population resides in rural areas; women represent 52% of rural population.

In Myanmar, rural women participate in a diverse array of activities, which include agriculture, household management, and crafts. They represent a substantial segment of the agricultural workforce, with estimates indicating that they constitute between 50% and 70% of this labor force (Asia Development Bank, 2019). Their responsibilities range from farming and trading seasonal crops to daily labor, livestock management, and the processing and marketing of agricultural goods.

We are dedicated to fostering sustainable development and creating social impact for our clients, the majority of whom are women. Half of our clients are women living and working in rural areas, and present numerous challenges, yet these women constitute a vital segment of Myanmar’s agricultural workforce, playing a key critical role in food production and sustaining rural livelihoods. Their skills in farming, livestock management, and post-harvest processing are critical for ensuring food security. Additionally, rural women manage essential household responsibilities, including cooking, cleaning, childcare, and eldercare, which are fundamental to family well-being and community support.

The ‘International Day for Rural Women’ is observed on October 15 each year to recognize the essential roles that rural women play in agriculture, rural development, food security, and poverty reduction. This day serves to highlight the obstacles they encounter, such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

One empowering quote from Michelle Obama that resonates with women in rural areas is:

“You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it’s important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.”

As we wrap up our celebration of International Rural Women’s Day in Myanmar, let us affirm our dedication to empowering rural women and advancing gender equality within our communities. We have underscored the significant contributions of rural women to our nation’s progress and the challenges they continue to face.
